SUSTAINABILITY HUB
Bawe Island is committed to environmental practices with the aim of implementing deeply-seeded sustainable practices that don’t compromise luxury.
A sustainable hotel concept which prioritizes the protection of natural biodiversity, with all gardening featuring natural African flora and fauna, is the premise to play a significant role in taking care of the natural environment including educating staff and guests.
The resort’s eco-friendly practices are wide-ranging and impressive including solar panels for water heating, the use of biodegradable and environmentally friendly detergents and a water-recycling system that treats and reuses sink and shower water for gardening purposes.
The property includes an onsite bottling plant so no single-use plastic bottles are necessary, a waste disposal system that coverts organic trash to compost which is then used as fertilized for gardening, and a sanitation treatment plant treating seawater—all while replacing plastic-wrapped amenities with eco-friendly substitutes.
The main water source on Bawe will be an RO (Reverse Osmosis) plant with a capacity of 132m3 per day, treating seawater. Additionally, a water bottling plant will fulfill all drinking water requirements for guests and staff. Bawe Island consists of an SBR (Sequential Batch Reactor) wastewater treatment plant with a capacity of 150 m3 per day.
The treated wastewater is used for gardening purposes.
Designed in an energy-efficient mindfulness, In Bawe Island more than half of electricity is generated by a solar system of 720 solar panels, the larger in Zanzibar, producing 378 KW. Each villa is equipped with a hot water system powered by solar heaters. This renewable energy source not only provides the guest with ample hot water but also reduces our carbon footprint and minimizes environmental impact.
Bawe Island also has its own organic vegetable garden where freshly harvested fruits and vegetables are meticulously served to our guests, ensuring a delightful culinary experience infused with the essence of the island’s bounty. We have also started proceedings with the government's Marine Conservation for the establishment of a protected area all around the island’s shores, considering the uniqueness of this spot featuring a unique dive site and a wide variety of fish and corals.
For the very first time in Zanzibar, Bawe Island promotes a perfect mix of natural living and luxury, making the prospect of low-impact travel not only a hope but a reality.
Through our efforts, we aim to inspire other hotels to join us in protecting and preserving our precious natural resources, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable world for future generations.
